All I can say...it's my all time favorite holiday. The only day where you don't have to be exactly just who you are. You can be any celebrity, favorite character and no one can say anything bad about it. Even as a kid, I loved Halloween. From Mom's homemade costumes to renting the scary movies from the video store, Halloween was top notch in my book.
The costumes we had as kids were very unique. One year mom was in charge of the Christmas program at church and had to make all of the costumes. so needless to say, for 4 years after that program, I was an angel, a wiseman, a donkey (yes, a donkey) and even Mary. As you can see, money was a little tight back then. But I have to say that my all time favorite costume that Mom made was in the 5th grade and I went as Jem from Jem and the Holograms. I rocked that costume at school and thru 3 halloween parties. Thanks Mom!
So as I sit here on Halloween watching the AMC Channels Fear Fest, I still get that feeling of being a kid all over again, and that is why Halloween is so important to me. Christmas changes as you get older, but Halloween stays the same!
Ya know Kelly your right this is the one time out of the year you can be someone else with no hard feelings because it's all in fun and if you can't take a joke then screw ya!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like your choice of costumes weren't on the best dress list but at least you had one. My mom use to dress me up as farm girl. Hell I grew up on a farm so what was the difference? Thanks to my Mom too!!!
Mostly, all I really cared aboutthough was the candy and since we did live so far from town we only got to drive around the section which amounted to about a square mile and 10 houses and god forbid if one of those houses weren't home I got screwed out of take of candy. But ya know back then candy was a full size bar none of this mini size and we use to get popcorn balls (homemade) and not have to worry about what or where they came from.
As a adult(somedays!!) I now like the part about handing out candy and seeing all of the cute outfits and the money that parents shell out for those costumes for the one day use. Lifes Good!!
I grew up playing biblical characters for halloween too because of lack of money! Talk about getting more mileage out of one costume. I cringe when I think about how much money I've spent on my little ones costumes that they only wore once. Now I have a rule, they can only be things that we can later throw in the dress up chest to be re-used. I've never seen so many variations of a princess! :-)
ReplyDeleteI especially liked the AMC Fright Fest marathon you mentioned. I was watching that as I was in labor with my youngest (who turned 3 on Halloween.) I joked with my mom that if my child turns out morbid or goth, I would blame her for making me watch it! :-)
I loved Jem and the Holograms! I had a Jem doll back in the day, but I had a hard time integrating her with all my Barbies. She was so much taller than my other dolls. And, you know how mean those Barbies can be sometimes. Plus she had a hard time getting a date with Ken!
